US Rig Count Unchanged at 1,057

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest gain with an increase of 3 units to a total of 525 rigs working.

The US drilling rig count remained unchanged at 1,057 units working for the week ended Aug. 17, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 111 units from this time a year ago when the count stood at 946.

Offshore units were up 1 rig from last week with 21 units working. A total of 1,034 rigs were drilling on land, down 1 from a week ago. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters remained unchanged at 2 units working.

US oil-directed rigs were unchanged at 869 and up from the 763 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs also were unchanged at 186. This time a year ago, 182 units were drilling for gas.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest gain with an increase of 3 units to a total of 525 rigs working.

Louisiana and Pennsylvania were both up 2 units, to reach 61 and 41 rigs working, respectively. Oklahoma gained 1 unit for the week to reach 140.

Five states were unchanged this week, namely North Dakota, 56; Colorado, 30; California, 16; Utah, 6; and Arkansas, 0.

Four states were down 1 rig each this week, namely Wyoming 29; Ohio, 22; West Virginia, 13; and Alaska, 6.

New Mexico saw the largest drop in rigs, falling 3 units to 104 rigs working.

Canada’s rig count gained 3 units this week to reach 212 rigs working. That count is down slightly from the 214 units working a year ago. Canada gained 1 oil-directed rig to reach 141 for the week ended Aug. 17 and gained 2 gas-directed rigs to reach 71.
